Like cars, trucks have undergone drastic changes since Henry Ford created the first car in 1900. However, one of the first manufactures to produce trucks was International Harvester. They produced trucks for approximately 68 years; from 1907 to 1975. They are best known for making Scouts. In 1917, the most popular truck to roll off the production line was Ford’s Model T. When these trucks first came off the line the price tag was $281. Nowadays these same old trucks for sale will cost you 100 times that amount. However, in 1917, this was considered a lot of money. Due to Fords’ success, other car manufactures got into the mix. Chevrolet was the next large manufacture to start designing and manufacturing automobiles. Ford

Chevy

The name Chevrolet has become synonymous with trucks.  The first Chevy truck rolled off the production line in 1918, the same year that Chevrolet Motor Company became a part of General Motors.  The 490 Light Delivery was Chevrolet's first truck.  Much of its components were identical to the cars, including the instrument panel, foot pedals and steering wheel.  In 1937, however, Chevy's pickup truck era took off.  One of Chevy's most famous trucks, though, was the Model 3124 Cameo Carrier in 1955.  This was the look that defined many trucks of that day and even today, this is the model that is most identified with when people think of antique trucks and shop for classic trucks for sale.

International Harvester Scout

While International Harvester is usually better know for their Scouts, IH did produce trucks from 1907 to 1975.  Their "light" line of vehicles gave us such classics as the A-series pickup and the International Harvester wagon.  Among antique trucks for sale, those produced by International Harvester are highly sought after because they are not a well known and the market is not saturated with them as it is with Ford and Chevrolet.

Willys

Best know for its Jeeps, Willys is a name that is familiar to collectors of antique trucks the world over. Although the Jeeps did, and still often do, overshadow the Willys trucks, they are still highly sought after by many collectors.  The FC170 was rather unusual in its cab styling while the 1957 Willys pickup had a fairly conventional cab style but still had a distinctive air.  The catch, though, is finding a Willys jeep  for sale.  There just aren't that many around and the people who do have them usually aren't very quick to turn loose of them.

Under the wheel well of the quarter panels are common areas to look at. Also take a look under the entire underbelly of the Jeep. When under the Jeep, take a look at the floorboards, these are common rust spots as well. You want to take a close look at the paint, if someone has painted over rust, this is usually easily detected. The paint will be bubbly and uneven over the damaged areas. Sometimes people will try to use Bondo or some other bonding agent to cover the rusted area. The problem is if the bonding agent is too thick, it won't hold and can actually fall off. If the rust is so bad that you need more than an eighth of an inch or so of filler, then you really need a better plan. One good method is to cut out the rusted part and weld a new piece of metal in its place.

1941 Willys Jeep

For decades the Willys name was synonymous with Jeep. Enthusiasts, collectors and off-roaders alike held it sacred. Today, while Willys no longer manufactures Willys Jeeps for sale, the name is still fresh on the tip of every Jeep enthusiast’s tongue. Much sought after Willys Jeep parts are discussed in off road clubs and forums across the nation. In the beginning...

As most legends start out, Willys began with one man’s dream. In 1908, John North Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of the Standard Wheel Company. Willys, pronounced WILL-iss, began his career as a bicycle salesman. Within a few years, he had expanded his business and was manufacturing his own line of bicycles. It seemed he had the Midas touch because in later years he began selling automobiles and eventually moved to automobile production. This is where we pick up the story with his acquisition of Overland and in 1912 Willys-Overland Motor Company came into existence.

A Legend is Born

In 1940, with World War II in full swing, Willys contracted to build military Jeeps and the first Willys Jeep rolled off the assembly line. By the end of the war in 1945, had produced somewhere in the neighborhood of 360,000 vehicles. Thus, a legend was born. The Willys Jeep was the rough and tumble granddaddy of the Jeeps we see on the road today. Bare bones, with no frills or extras, these hardy vehicles bore names such as the Willys Quad and the Willys Ma. These vehicles served their country well and today are coveted items for collectors.

Willys Quad

With Bantam and Ford acting as fierce competitors for a large scale military contract, Willys offered up the Quad – and won. With its 60 horsepower “Go Devil” engine that left Ford and Bantam in the dust, the Quad offered the power and performance that was needed. It did require some modifications, however, in order to conform to the Army’s requirements and was pared down to lighten it up a bit. It is the Quad that serves as the landmark for the beginning of the Willys reign and domination over the industry.

Willys Ma

The Ma came along on the coattails of the Quad in 1941. The Ma was a “new and improved” version of the Quad, with a pared down body style and column shift. Willys was tasked with an order of 1,500 and they delivered the little workhorse 1,553 strong. Today only about 30 are believed to still be around and several have found their way into military and automobile museums.

Willys Goes Civic

With the end of the war in 1945, Willys saw the end of the high volume military contract, causing them to look toward civilian life. Willys-Overland began producing the CJ line of Willys Jeep for sale, the CJ standing for “Civilian Jeep.” The CJ2A model was the first model to hit the streets. Willys trucks, Willys pickups, Willys wagons and the Jeepster were still to come, but the CJ2A started it all.

The CJ2A shared the production line with the Willys MB so it is no wonder that they are very similar vehicles. Like the MB, the CJ2A sported a column shift, tailgate, larger headlights and a side mounted spare tire. There were other features that the CJ shared with the MB such as single piece windshield adjusting arms, and a full floating rear axle. Primarily used for agricultural purposes in the early years, this civilian Jeep was well received and the infatuation only grew from there.

Willys Expands

The first Willys Truck was produced in 1947 and from 1947 to 1965 more than 200,000 rolled off the production line. As Willys pickups, Jeepsters and Willys Wagons expanded the Willys line of vehicles, performance was enhanced and America was bitten by the Jeep bug. Overseas militaries were soon purchasing Jeeps as well.

The world has fallen in love with the Willys line of vehicles. Whether it is the ever popular Willys Trucks, Willys Pickup or the ever popular Jeep, collectors and enthusiasts avidly seek these gems. This is no small feat because many of the Willys Jeep parts are rare and quite difficult to locate which can make resto projects a challenge. 1967-72

In 1967 Chevy decided to give their popular trucks a new modern look. They also wanted to market the truck as an all around everyday vehicle instead of just a work truck. For these years, the body style remained much the same with slight variances and added trim packages. Below we will discuss some of the differences between years.

1967

1967 Chevy C-10

The '67 marked a new day in Chevy trucks, new body style and comfort options like coil springs instead of leaf led to ads that read "A Chevy truck is made to be woman handled." The 1967 C/K truck series standard drive train came with a three-speed transmission and the choice of two engine sizes: the 250 straight 6 and 283 V-8.  Optional transmissions included a 4-speed manual, Powerglide and Turbo-Hydromatic. Half ton trucks have a six hole bolt pattern while ¾ ton and 1 ton are eight hole.

1968

1968 celebrated 50 years of truck making for Chevrolet, this is the year the 283 cid was replaced by the 307 cid and the first offering of the 396 cid V-8 took place. Little changed in the body style with the exception of side marker reflectors on all fenders and the loss of the small rear window cab. GMC also revised their grille this year taking away the embossing on the horizontal crossbar.

1969

1969 Chevy C-10 Cheyenne

1969 was the beginning of the ever-popular 350-cid V-8 engine, with the new engine came a revised hood. It is important to note here that the hoods from 69- 72 cannot be interchanged on the earlier models without changing the fenders as well. The 67-68 hood had less of a slope than the later models. One of the most notable interior changes was the switch from a hand-operated emergency brake to a foot pedal.

The K-5 blazer and the GMC Jimmy also made their first appearances this year.

1970

With the exception of a slight change in the appearance of the grille very little else changed from '69-'70. In fact, it is really hard to tell the two years apart, the highlighting on the grille breaks the sections into six parts.

1971

More changes would occur this year though they were mainly aimed at trim packages. In '71, you would have the option of the Chevy Cheyenne or GMC Sierra, these packages included more padding, and insulation on the interior, carpet, chrome as well as the first factory installed AM/FM radios. In the area of performance all light duty trucks were now offered with front disc brakes instead of drum, this increased stopping ability and reduced brake fade. While on the subject of wheels you may want to note that while most half ton models to this point used six hole lug bolt pattern in '71 the two wheel drive models switched to the more commonly used five hole lug pattern.

1972

1971 Chevy Stepside

Once again we find a year with little change, I guess when you have found perfection why mess with it? Anyway, on this year the only notable difference was the removal of the rear view mirror from the top of the cab to a glued on mirror on the windshield. The trim packages also offered wood grain inserts on the Cheyenne and Sierra options.
